CEA carries out about one fourth of French research on new energy technologies with over 4,200 researchers working on low-carbon energies. CEA's work on renewable energies focuses on solar thermal power and solar photovoltaics, electric vehicles, 2nd- and 3rd generation biofuels, hydrogen and fuel cells, energy efficiency and energy conservation in buildings.
The top laboratory in its field, CEA's Laboratory for Innovation in New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials (Liten) is committed to developing solar power and its integration into buildings, electrical energy sources for the transportation industry, and nanomaterials for energy. Climatologists at the Laboratory for Climate and Environment Sciences (LSCE) model the Earth system to predict the future climate and its consequences on the environment.
CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world.
